SQL Server 2022 Enterprise vs Standard

Both editions share the same Database Engine, the same T-SQL surface and the same tooling, so applications certified for one run on the other. The difference is scale and availability. Use the table to decide whether Enterprise is required or whether the Standard edition would do.

Licensing explained: per core, perpetual, virtualization friendly

SQL Server Enterprise is licensed per core only. Core licenses are sold in 2-core packs, and every physical processor must carry at least 4 core licenses. In a virtual machine you license the virtual cores assigned to it, again with a 4-core minimum per VM. Alternatively, an organization may license all physical cores of a host, which is how many companies license consolidated SQL Server farms. Server plus CAL licensing is not available for Enterprise; that model belongs to the Standard edition.

The license is perpetual. Once the key is applied, the instance stays licensed indefinitely, through every cumulative update, with no renewal. Applying the key or upgrading in place

On a new server, run SQL Server 2022 Setup, choose New SQL Server stand-alone installation and enter the key on the Product Key page. Setup enables Enterprise features automatically. To convert an existing Evaluation, Developer or Standard instance, open the Installation Center, choose Maintenance, then Edition Upgrade, and supply the same key. The conversion keeps every database, login and Agent job in place and needs only a brief restart of the SQL Server service.

Planning high availability with the Enterprise edition

A common Enterprise design is a three-replica availability group: a synchronous secondary in the same data center for automatic failover, and an asynchronous secondary at a second site for disaster recovery, with the second site replica set to read-only so reports and backups run there. Every replica that hosts a licensed workload needs core licenses, and passive failover rights beyond that depend on Software Assurance, which is a separate Microsoft program.
