Windows Server 2022 Standard, Datacenter and RDS CALs
Windows Server 2022 is the long-term servicing release that most small and mid-sized organizations still run on their file servers, domain controllers, Hyper-V hosts and Remote Desktop hosts. This category holds every Windows Server 2022 license we sell: Windows Server 2022 Standard, Standard 16-Core, Datacenter, Datacenter 16-Core, and a 50 User RDS CAL pack for Remote Desktop Services. Each is a genuine perpetual license, a one-time purchase with no subscription, delivered by email within minutes of payment with the official Microsoft download link.
A Windows Server 2022 Standard license is the right starting point for a single physical server that runs the operating system directly or hosts a couple of virtual machines. Datacenter is for hosts that run many virtual machines. RDS CALs are required in addition to the server license whenever users connect over Remote Desktop. The sections below explain the per-core rules, compare the editions, and point to the specific product for each common setup so you can order once and order correctly.
How Windows Server 2022 licensing works
Windows Server 2022 Standard and Datacenter are licensed per physical core, with a 16-core minimum per server. In practice this means every server needs at least 16 cores licensed even if the processor has fewer, and a server with more than 16 cores needs additional core licenses to cover them all. Our 16-Core products are exactly that minimum in a single key. On top of the server license, every user or device that accesses the server needs a Client Access License, and any user who connects through Remote Desktop Services needs an RDS CAL in addition to the base CAL.
| Edition | Virtual machine rights | Licensing model | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Server 2022 Standard | 2 operating system environments (OSEs) or Hyper-V containers per license, plus the host when it runs only Hyper-V | Per core, 16-core minimum | Physical servers, small virtualization, branch offices |
| Windows Server 2022 Datacenter | Unlimited OSEs and Hyper-V containers on the licensed host | Per core, 16-core minimum | Dense virtualization hosts, private cloud, software-defined storage and networking |
| Windows Server 2022 RDS 50 User CALs | Not applicable; licenses 50 named users for Remote Desktop | Per user | Terminal servers, remote application hosts |
Standard or Datacenter: the practical test
Count the virtual machines you plan to run on the host. If the answer is two or fewer, Windows Server 2022 Standard edition covers it, since one Standard license permits two OSEs alongside a host that does nothing but run Hyper-V. If you need more than two VMs, you can either stack additional Standard licenses, each adding two more OSEs, or move to Datacenter, which removes the limit. The crossover point where Datacenter becomes the simpler choice is usually somewhere around a dozen virtual machines on one host. Datacenter also unlocks Storage Spaces Direct, Software-Defined Networking and shielded virtual machines, which Standard does not include.
Which Windows Server 2022 license should I choose?
These are the products in this category and the setups each one fits.
- Microsoft Windows Server 2022 Standard: the base Standard license for a physical server or a light Hyper-V host running up to two VMs. The product page states the core coverage and license type.
- Microsoft Windows Server 2022 Standard 16-Core: the 16-core minimum in one key, which is what a typical single or dual-processor server needs to be correctly licensed.
- Microsoft Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: unlimited virtual machines on the licensed host, for consolidation and private cloud deployments.
- Microsoft Windows Server 2022 Datacenter 16-Core: the 16-core minimum Datacenter license for a virtualization host that will run many guests.
- Windows Server 2022 RDS 50 User CALs: licenses 50 named users to connect through Remote Desktop Services, required in addition to the server license and base CALs.
If you are also standing up a database, our SQL Server 2022 Standard and Enterprise licenses pair with Windows Server 2022 on the same host.
What Windows Server 2022 brings
Microsoft Windows Server 2022 built on the 2019 release with a security focus. Secured-core server combines hardware root of trust, firmware protection and virtualization-based security to defend against firmware and kernel attacks. TLS 1.3 and DNS over HTTPS are enabled, SMB traffic can be encrypted with AES-256 and compressed on the wire, and Windows Admin Center gives a browser-based management console for both physical and virtual servers. Hyper-V, Storage Spaces, Active Directory and Remote Desktop Services all carry forward with incremental improvements. Windows Server 2022 follows Microsoft's Fixed Lifecycle Policy, with mainstream support scheduled to end October 13, 2026 and extended support running to October 14, 2031, which gives a long, predictable window for security updates.
How activation and delivery work
Server licenses are delivered the same way as every product we sell, digitally and within minutes.
- Choose the edition and pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay through our encrypted, PCI-compliant checkout. We never see your card number.
- Within minutes of payment, 7 days a week, we email the 25-character product key, the official Microsoft download link for Windows Server 2022 and a short installation guide. The key is also stored under My Account.
- Download the ISO from Microsoft, create installation media or mount it in your hypervisor, install Windows Server 2022 and enter the key when prompted, or apply it afterwards with slmgr from an administrator command prompt.
- Activate over the internet. If your server sits on an isolated network and Microsoft requests phone activation, send us the Installation ID and our team returns the Confirmation ID.
- RDS CALs are installed on the Remote Desktop licensing server through the RD Licensing Manager, using the license key pack from your delivery email. If a key cannot be activated and support cannot fix it, our 30-day money-back guarantee gives you a replacement or a full refund.
Retail, OEM or volume for server licenses
Each Windows Server 2022 product page states whether the license is retail, OEM or volume. Retail keys can be moved to a new server after removal from the old one. OEM keys are bound to the first server they activate on, which is common for licenses bought with hardware. Volume keys have a fixed activation count and are intended for organizations. For a server that will be replaced on a hardware cycle, retail keeps your options open. For a fixed appliance or a host that will run to retirement, OEM or volume is a reasonable fit. In every case the license is perpetual and the installation media comes from Microsoft.
Windows Server 2022 or 2025?
Both are current, both are licensed per core with the same 16-core minimum and the same Standard and Datacenter split. Windows Server 2025 adds hotpatching options, newer Hyper-V and storage features and a later end of support, while Windows Server 2022 has the longer real-world track record and broader driver and application certification for existing workloads. If you are replacing a 2016 or 2019 server and your applications are certified for 2022, staying on 2022 is a low-risk choice with security updates through 2031. If you are building new and want the latest features, look at 2025.
Frequently asked questions about Windows Server 2022
How many cores does a Windows Server 2022 Standard license cover?
Windows Server 2022 is licensed per physical core with a minimum of 16 cores per server, and our 16-Core Standard product covers exactly that minimum in one key. If your server has a single 8-core processor, you still license 16 cores. If it has two 12-core processors, 24 cores, you need the 16-core license plus additional core coverage to reach 24. The product page states how many cores each key covers. Standard also permits two virtual machines per license on a host that runs only Hyper-V.
Do I need CALs in addition to the Windows Server 2022 license?
Yes. The server license covers the operating system on the hardware. Every user or device that accesses that server, for file shares, authentication, printing or applications, needs a Windows Server Client Access License. If users connect over Remote Desktop, they also need an RDS CAL in addition to the base CAL. Our Windows Server 2022 RDS 50 User CALs product licenses 50 named users for Remote Desktop Services and is installed on your RD licensing server. Correct CAL coverage is what keeps a deployment compliant.
What is the difference between Windows Server 2022 Standard and Datacenter?
Virtual machine rights and advanced features. Standard permits two operating system environments or Hyper-V containers per license on a host that runs only Hyper-V; Datacenter permits an unlimited number. Datacenter also includes Storage Spaces Direct, Software-Defined Networking, shielded virtual machines and unlimited Windows Server containers, which Standard does not. Core features such as Active Directory, file services, Hyper-V itself and Remote Desktop Services are the same in both. Choose Standard for physical servers and light virtualization, Datacenter for dense hosts.
Is Windows Server 2022 still supported by Microsoft?
Yes. Windows Server 2022 follows Microsoft's Fixed Lifecycle Policy. Mainstream support is scheduled to end on October 13, 2026, and extended support, which continues to deliver security updates, runs until October 14, 2031. That gives a long and predictable window for organizations that standardize on 2022 today. The license itself is perpetual, so the software keeps running after those dates; the dates only govern how long Microsoft issues patches. For the newest release with a later end of support, see our Windows Server 2025 category.
Can I run Windows Server 2022 as a virtual machine on another hypervisor?
Yes. The per-core licensing applies to the physical host, and once the host is licensed, Standard permits two Windows Server VMs and Datacenter permits unlimited VMs on it, whether the hypervisor is Hyper-V or a third-party product such as VMware. If the physical host runs a third-party hypervisor rather than Hyper-V, the two OSEs on Standard are the two guest VMs. The same 16-core minimum applies to the host's physical cores regardless of how many cores you assign to each guest.
Every Windows Server 2022 key is delivered by email within minutes with the Microsoft download link and is backed by our 30-day money-back guarantee.
