Windows Server 2022 Standard vs Datacenter

The question we hear most on this product page is the difference between Windows Server Standard and Datacenter. Roles, management tooling and hardware requirements are the same in both. The differences lie in virtualization rights and software-defined datacenter features.

If a host will carry more than four or five virtual machines, price a single Windows Server 2022 Datacenter license against stacked Standard licenses; Datacenter usually comes out ahead at that point and also adds Storage Spaces Direct.

Base listing vs the 16-Core pack: how to buy the right quantity

Microsoft licenses Windows Server 2022 per physical core, with a minimum of 8 core licenses per processor and 16 per server. We sell the Standard edition two ways to make that simple. The 16-Core pack is the fixed minimum for one server, bought once. This base listing covers the core count shown in the Product Overview table and is bought in quantity to reach an exact total. A 24-core dual-socket server, for instance, is one 16-Core pack plus enough base licenses to cover eight more cores, or the equivalent number of base licenses alone. Both listings are the same edition and media and activate identically.

Windows Server 2022 runs on a wide range of hardware, including servers several generations old. Microsoft's minimums are as follows, with our practical recommendations.

Licensing explained

A Windows Server 2022 Standard license is perpetual. You pay once and the right to run the software does not lapse, which makes a windows server 2022 standard license a predictable alternative to subscription cloud servers. Licensing is per physical core with a 16-core minimum. Once a server is fully licensed you may run the operating system on the physical host and in two virtual machines, provided the host runs only the Hyper-V role and management software. Licensing the same server again adds two more virtual machines.

Access is licensed separately from the server. Each user or device that authenticates to the server needs a Windows Server 2022 CAL, and users who connect through Remote Desktop Services need an RDS CAL as well; our Windows Server 2022 RDS 50 User CAL pack covers them. Transfer rights depend on the license type. Retail licenses can be moved to a new server after removal from the old one, OEM licenses stay with the original server, and volume keys are for one organization with limited activations. Moving from Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016 or 2019

A large share of buyers on this page are replacing an older server rather than adding a new one. Windows Server 2022 supports in-place upgrade from Windows Server 2016 and 2019, but for domain controllers and file servers we recommend a fresh install and a side-by-side migration: promote the new server as an additional domain controller, transfer the FSMO roles, then demote the old one. For file shares, the Storage Migration Service built into Windows Admin Center copies data, permissions and even the server name and IP address so users see no change. Applications should be reinstalled rather than upgraded wherever the vendor allows it.

Licensing follows the new hardware, not the old license. A retail Windows Server 2022 license you already own may be moved to the new server after it is removed from the old one; an OEM license from the retiring server stays with that hardware and cannot be reused. Count the cores of the new server and license it in full with this base listing, the 16-Core pack or a combination.

Worked example

A dual-socket server with two 10-core processors has 20 physical cores. Microsoft's minimum of 16 is already exceeded, so all 20 must be licensed: the 16-Core pack plus base licenses covering 4 more cores, or 20 cores' worth of base licenses from this page. If the same server will run four virtual machines, license those 20 cores a second time under Standard, or compare the price of a single Datacenter license. Fifty staff who sign in need 50 Windows Server 2022 CALs, and the ten who use Remote Desktop need 10 RDS CALs on top.

Windows Server 2022 or 2025

Microsoft supports Windows Server 2022 in mainstream until October 13, 2026 and in extended support, with security updates, until October 14, 2031.
