Windows 10 support status: what changed in October 2025
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 Home, Pro, Education and Enterprise (the mainstream, General Availability channel) on October 14, 2025. The operating system keeps working and a genuine Windows 10 activation key still activates, but those editions no longer receive security updates unless a PC is enrolled in Microsoft's paid Extended Security Updates program, which runs for a limited period.
The Long-Term Servicing Channel editions follow separate lifecycles that were set when they shipped. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 receives security updates into January 2029. Enterprise LTSC 2021 receives them into January 2027. IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 has the longest runway, into January 2032. That is why the LTSC products in this category attract buyers who need Windows 10 to stay patched on hardware that will never run Windows 11, whether that is a factory PC, a clinic workstation or a point-of-sale terminal.

How activation and delivery work

A retail Windows 10 license key can be removed from one PC and activated on another, which is the flexible option for a machine you may rebuild. An OEM key is bound to the first PC it activates and stays there. Volume (MAK) keys, which is how Enterprise and LTSC editions are typically licensed, allow a limited number of activations and are meant for organizations. Can I still buy and activate a Windows 10 Pro key in 2026?
Yes. Microsoft's end of support on October 14, 2025 stopped security updates for the mainstream editions, but it did not stop activation. A genuine Windows 10 Pro product key still activates on Microsoft's servers, and the operating system continues to run. Weigh the risk: a Windows 10 Home or Pro PC connected to the internet without updates should be kept behind a firewall and used with care, or enrolled in Microsoft's Extended Security Updates program. For updates that continue for years, choose an LTSC edition.
Which Windows 10 edition still gets security updates?
The Long-Term Servicing Channel editions. None of them receive feature updates, which is intentional: they exist for machines that should run the same build unchanged. What is the difference between the Windows 10 Pro 1 PC and 5 PC keys?
The edition and features are identical; the 5-PC key simply allows five separate installs to activate under the same key, which suits a small office or a family with several older machines. If you buy the 1 PC key and later need more seats, you can buy additional single keys; there is no requirement to switch to the multi-PC product.
