Windows 10 Pro N license key: Pro without the media apps

The letter N confuses a lot of buyers, so let us start there. Windows 10 Pro N is Windows 10 Professional with the media-related components left out. The N editions exist because of a European Commission ruling in 2004 that required Microsoft to offer Windows without Windows Media Player. Twenty years later the N versions are sold worldwide, and they have quietly become a favorite of two very different groups: administrators who want a business PC with no consumer media apps on it, and PC owners who discovered that their machine was installed with the N edition and that only a matching Pro N key will activate it.

1. The PC is already running Pro N. Editions and keys must match. If Settings, then System, then About shows the Pro N edition, a regular Pro key will be rejected and this is the key you need. It happens more often than you would think, because N media is easy to download by mistake and many refurbished machines ship with it.
2. A locked-down business image. Kiosks, front-desk PCs, point-of-sale terminals and shared workstations have no reason to carry Windows Media Player, Movies and TV or Voice Recorder. Pro N removes them from the start, which means fewer apps to disable by policy and fewer updates for components nobody uses.
3. Personal preference. Some users would rather pick their own media player, such as VLC or a browser-based service, and want the smallest supported Windows 10 Pro install. Pro N gives them that, with the Media Feature Pack available later if plans change.

What is removed, what stays, and how to add media back

The following components are absent from a Pro N install: Windows Media Player, Movies and TV, Groove Music (in older builds), Voice Recorder, Skype (in builds that bundled it) and the Windows Media Format, Windows Media DRM, Media Foundation and related codecs. Practical consequences: some third-party apps that expect Media Foundation, including a few video-conferencing tools, camera apps and games, may fail to play audio or video until the Media Feature Pack is installed. Microsoft Edge plays most web video normally, but some DRM-protected streaming services require the pack.

Adding it back takes a few minutes: open Settings, then Apps, then Optional features, choose Add a feature, search for Media Feature Pack, install it and restart. The pack is free, comes from Microsoft, and matches your Windows 10 version. After that the machine behaves like standard Windows 10 Pro in every respect, while your license remains Pro N.

One practical tip for administrators: if you deploy Pro N deliberately and later need media support on a subset of machines, the Media Feature Pack can be pushed through Windows Update for Business, Intune or a DISM command as an optional capability, so you keep one base image and add the feature only where it is wanted. Home users can simply install it from Optional features the first time a video refuses to play.

Pro N has no TPM, Secure Boot or processor generation requirement, which is why it remains a practical choice for business hardware that cannot move to Windows 11. The N media is a separate download from the standard ISO, so use the link in your delivery email rather than a generic Windows 10 download to make sure the edition on the USB drive matches the key you bought.

Licensing explained

One Pro N license key activates one PC. It is a full version key, so it works for a clean install from the official N media, for activating a Pro N copy installed without a key, and for reactivating after a hardware change. It does not activate standard Windows 10 Pro; the editions must match.

Transfer rights depend on the license type, which is shown in the Product Overview table on this page. In general terms, a retail license can be deactivated on one PC and moved to another; an OEM license stays with the first PC; a volume (MAK) license has a limited number of activations and is meant for organizations.
