For a new project on a current PC, Access 2024 is the sensible default. Access 2021 is the right choice when the rest of the machine runs Office 2021 and you want the versions to match, because Microsoft does not support mixing releases from different generations in one installation. Both versions use the same .accdb file format, so databases move between them without conversion.
Is Microsoft Access going away?
This is one of the most common questions we receive, so here is the conservative answer. Microsoft included Access in Office 2024, both in the Professional Plus suite and as this standalone application, and its published support date is October 9, 2029. Microsoft has not announced an end-of-life date for Access. What has changed is that Microsoft now emphasizes cloud tools such as Power Apps and Dataverse for new development, and Access web apps were retired years ago. The desktop application itself continues to be sold, updated and supported, and a perpetual key bought today will keep working on your PC regardless of future marketing decisions.
Which edition should I choose?
- Microsoft Access 2024 Professional: the current release for Windows 10 or 11, supported until October 9, 2029. Sold as a bind key that links the license to your Microsoft account, which makes reinstalling on a replacement PC simple.
- Microsoft Access 2021 Professional: the previous release, the right fit when your other Office apps are 2021 or when a company standard specifies that version.

Does Microsoft Access 2024 run on a Mac?
No. Access is a Windows-only application and Microsoft has never shipped a Mac version. Both keys in this category require Windows 10 or Windows 11. Mac users who need to run an Access database typically install Windows in a virtual machine such as Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion and run Access inside it, which works but requires a Windows license as well. If you only need to read data from an Access file on a Mac, exporting it to Excel or a SQL database from a Windows PC is usually simpler.
What is a bind key and how is it different from a normal key?
A bind key is a retail product key that is redeemed to your Microsoft account rather than typed into the application after installation. You sign in at Microsoft's redemption page, enter the 25-character key, and Access 2024 appears under your account's products. From then on you download and activate by signing in. The benefit is convenience: when you replace your PC, you sign in and reinstall without hunting for the key. The license is still perpetual and still a one-time purchase.
Can I open a database from Access 2010 or 2013 in Access 2024?
Yes, in most cases. Access 2024 opens .accdb files created in Access 2007 and later without conversion, and it can open and convert older .mdb files from Access 2000 through 2003. Databases that rely on discontinued features such as Access web apps or certain legacy ActiveX controls may need some rework, and VBA code that references removed libraries may require updates. For a typical small business database of tables, queries, forms and reports, the move to Access 2024 is straightforward.
Is Access being discontinued?
Microsoft has not announced a retirement date for Microsoft Access. It is included in Office 2024 Professional Plus, sold as this standalone Access 2024 application, and included in several Microsoft 365 business plans, with published support running until October 9, 2029. Microsoft does promote Power Apps and Dataverse for new cloud development, and it retired Access web apps some years ago, but the desktop database application continues to be developed and supported. A perpetual license you buy today does not expire if Microsoft changes course later.
Can I install Access 2024 next to an Office 2021 suite?
Microsoft does not support mixing Office applications from different release years in one installation, and the installer may refuse to continue or may prompt you to remove the older suite. If your PC runs Office 2021, the safer choice is Access 2021 Professional, which installs alongside it cleanly.
