Microsoft ended support for Windows 8.1 on January 10, 2023. There was no consumer Extended Security Update program, so the operating system has received no security patches since that date. Activation, however, continues to work, and a genuine Windows 8.1 Pro key still activates a fresh install.

Windows 8.1 is appropriate for a device kept off the open internet or on a segmented network, for hardware whose drivers exist only for this release, and for running an application that its vendor never moved forward. Windows 8.1 Pro is the direct ancestor of Windows 10 Pro: the same BitLocker, the same domain join and Group Policy, the same client Hyper-V. A Windows 8.1 pro key activates either the 32-bit or the 64-bit build of Professional, but not the core edition or Enterprise, so check the edition on your installation media before you enter it.
Which Windows 8.1 product should I choose?
Within this category the choice is simple, because Professional is the edition we carry. The more useful question is whether Windows 8.1 is the right release at all, so here is the Windows 8.1 product alongside the two current alternatives most buyers weigh it against.

How activation and delivery work

One caution for a clean install: Windows 8.1 media requires a Windows 8.1 key, not a Windows 8 key, and the key must be for Pro if the media is Pro. Generic setup media that lets you choose the edition will pick the edition from the key you enter, which is the behavior you want.

Frequently asked questions about Windows 8.1 keys
Can I still activate Windows 8.1 with a new key?
Yes. Microsoft's end of support on January 10, 2023 stopped security updates, but activation servers for Windows 8.1 continue to operate and a genuine Windows 8.1 Pro key activates a clean install. Online activation usually works; if Windows shows an Installation ID and asks for phone activation, send that ID to our support team and we email back the Confirmation ID, seven days a week. This is a normal part of activating an older release and not a sign the key is faulty.
Why do you only sell Windows 8.1 Pro and not the core edition?
Because Pro activates on the same hardware and covers every situation the core edition does, plus the business features that the machines still running 8.1 tend to need: BitLocker, domain join, Group Policy and hosting Remote Desktop. Stocking a single edition also avoids the most common activation mistake, a key that does not match the installed edition. If you have core-edition media, use generic Windows 8.1 setup media and let the Pro key select the edition during install.
Can a Windows 8.1 key activate Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No. Microsoft accepted Windows 8.1 keys for Windows 10 activation during the free upgrade offer, and for a while after, but that path has been closed and such keys are rejected today. If you want Windows 10 or Windows 11, buy that key directly from our operating systems categories. A Windows 8.1 pro product key is the right buy only when the plan is to run Windows 8.1 itself on hardware or software that depends on it.
Is Windows 8.1 the same as Windows 8?
Windows 8.1 is the 2013 update to Windows 8, and Microsoft treated it as a distinct release with its own keys. A Windows 8 key does not activate Windows 8.1 media during setup, and a Windows 8.1 key does not activate original Windows 8 media. If a machine currently runs Windows 8, upgrade it to 8.1 through the Windows Store path or, more simply, perform a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro using the key from this category. Support for Windows 8 itself ended in January 2016.
Does the key work on 32-bit and 64-bit installs?
Yes. The key is tied to the edition, Professional, not to the processor architecture, so it activates either the 32-bit or the 64-bit build of Windows 8.1 Pro. Choose 64-bit on any machine with a 64-bit processor and more than 4 GB of RAM. Choose 32-bit only when a specific driver or application exists solely in 32-bit form, which does occur with older peripherals and industrial equipment. Client Hyper-V is available only on the 64-bit build.
