Windows Server 2025 Datacenter license key: unlimited virtualization on your own hardware
Windows Server 2025 Datacenter is the top edition of Microsoft's current server operating system, built for hosts that run many virtual machines, for hyper-converged clusters and for organizations that want software-defined storage and networking without cloud fees. Once a physical server is fully licensed with Datacenter, you may run an unlimited number of Windows Server virtual machines on it. This listing is our base Windows Server 2025 Datacenter license. It is the building block you buy in quantity to license the exact number of physical cores in your server, and the cores covered by one purchase, along with the license type, are shown in the Product Overview table on this page.
As with every key we sell, this is a genuine Microsoft product key and a one-time purchase with no subscription. The key, Microsoft's official ISO download link and a short guide are emailed within minutes in most cases, seven days a week, and stored under My Account. A 30-day money-back guarantee and a support team of real people back every order.
Who buys Windows Server 2025 Datacenter
Companies consolidating a rack of older physical servers onto one or two dense Hyper-V hosts
IT teams building a two- to four-node cluster with Storage Spaces Direct instead of a separate SAN
Hosting providers and MSPs that spin up virtual machines for many customers on shared hardware
Security-conscious organizations that want shielded virtual machines and a Host Guardian Service
Enterprises with servers above 16 cores, such as 24-, 32- or 64-core dual-socket systems, that need exact per-core licensing
If your host has 16 or fewer cores and you want a single purchase, see the Datacenter 16-Core pack. Servers with more cores start with that pack and add base licenses from this page to cover the remainder.
Key features
Unlimited Windows Server virtual machines and unlimited Hyper-V isolated containers per licensed host

The rule of thumb: with fewer than about five virtual machines per host, stacking Windows Server 2025 Standard licenses is cheaper. Above that point, or whenever you need Storage Spaces Direct or shielded VMs, Datacenter wins.
Base license vs the 16-Core pack
Microsoft requires a minimum of 16 core licenses per server and 8 per processor, and every physical core must be licensed. We therefore sell Windows Server 2025 Datacenter in two forms. The 16-Core pack is the fixed minimum for a server with up to two processors and 16 cores. The base listing on this page covers the smaller core count stated in the Product Overview table and is meant to be purchased in quantity to reach an exact total. A 32-core host, for example, is one 16-Core pack plus enough base licenses to cover 16 additional cores. Because Datacenter already includes unlimited virtual machines, there is never a reason to license a Datacenter host twice; you only ever license the physical cores once.
Count physical cores across all sockets, ignore hyper-threading, round each processor up to at least 8 and the server up to at least 16, and buy accordingly. Send us the processor model if you want us to confirm the quantity before you order.
System requirements
Datacenter has the same base requirements as Standard, but the hosts it is designed for are far larger. Treat these as absolute minimums.
1.4 GHz 64-bit processor with NX, DEP, CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF, PrefetchW, SSE4.2, POPCNT and SLAT for Hyper-V; Intel VT-x or AMD-V enabled in firmware
512 MB RAM (Server Core) or 2 GB (Desktop Experience) minimum; plan ECC memory sized for every virtual machine you will host
32 GB system disk minimum; separate fast storage for VM files or a Storage Spaces Direct pool of SSD and NVMe drives
Gigabit Ethernet at minimum; 10 GbE or faster with RDMA recommended for Storage Spaces Direct clusters
UEFI 2.3.1c with Secure Boot and TPM 2.0, required for shielded virtual machines and recommended for all hosts
Internet access for activation, or phone activation for isolated hosts, which our team can assist with
Licensing explained
A Windows Server 2025 Datacenter license is perpetual: one payment, no renewal, and it remains valid for the life of the hardware. Coverage is per physical core with a 16-core minimum per server. Once all cores are licensed, the host may run unlimited Windows Server virtual machines, which is the reason buyers searching for a windows server 2025 license for a virtualization host almost always end up with Datacenter. The license also lets you run the operating system on the physical host itself, without restricting it to the Hyper-V role as Standard does.
Client access is separate. Every user or device that authenticates to the server, or to any virtual machine on it, needs a Windows Server CAL, and each user who connects to a Remote Desktop Session Host needs an RDS CAL. Our Windows Server 2025 RDS 50 User CAL pack covers Remote Desktop users. Transfer rights depend on the license type: retail licenses may move to a new server after removal, OEM licenses stay with the original hardware, and volume keys are for one organization with limited activations. The type for this product is shown in the Product Overview table.
Worked licensing examples
Because this is the base listing, a few worked examples help. A single-socket host with one 24-core processor needs 24 core licenses: the 16-Core pack plus base licenses covering 8 more cores. A dual-socket host with two 16-core processors needs 32 core licenses: the 16-Core pack plus base licenses for 16 more. A four-node cluster of dual 12-core servers needs 24 core licenses per node, licensed node by node, since Windows Server licenses are assigned to physical servers, not to the cluster as a whole. In every case the number of virtual machines is irrelevant to the count; Datacenter covers unlimited guests once the physical cores are licensed.
When you build a Storage Spaces Direct cluster, each node must carry its own full Datacenter license, and live migration between nodes is permitted because every destination host is already licensed. This is one of the practical reasons Datacenter suits clusters: with Standard, a migrated virtual machine must land on a host with spare virtualization rights, which is hard to guarantee during failover.
Ordering checklist
Read the physical core count of each processor from the manufacturer's specification sheet; Task Manager shows logical processors, which do not count
Round each processor up to 8 cores and each server up to 16, then total the cores per node
Divide by the cores per purchase shown in the Product Overview table and order that quantity per host
Budget Windows Server CALs for every user or device, and RDS CALs for Remote Desktop users, since neither is included
Confirm Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 are enabled if you plan to use shielded virtual machines
Lifecycle and the 2022 alternative
Windows Server 2025 follows the Long-Term Servicing Channel with five years of mainstream and five years of extended support, into 2034. Windows Server 2022 mainstream support ends October 13, 2026 and extended support ends October 14, 2031. New clusters belong on 2025. If you are adding a node to a 2022 cluster, our Windows Server 2022 Datacenter license keeps every node on the same version.

Hosts on isolated networks can be activated by phone. Send us the Installation ID from the activation screen and we return the Confirmation ID. Support answers email seven days a week.
Frequently asked questions
How many Windows Server 2025 Datacenter licenses do I need for my host?
Count the physical cores in every processor, treat any processor with fewer than 8 cores as 8, and treat the server as at least 16. Divide the total by the core count per purchase shown in the Product Overview table. A dual-socket 32-core host, for example, needs 32 core licenses. Many buyers start with our 16-Core pack and add base licenses from this page to cover the rest.
What does Datacenter give me that Standard does not?
Unlimited virtual machines and Hyper-V containers on the licensed host, Storage Spaces Direct for hyper-converged storage, software-defined networking, shielded virtual machines and unrestricted Storage Replica. Standard is capped at two virtual machines per license and lacks those features. Both editions share the same roles, hardware requirements and 10-year lifecycle, so the choice comes down to how many VMs you will run and whether you need software-defined infrastructure.
Do I need to license Windows Server 2025 Datacenter more than once for extra virtual machines?
No. Once every physical core in the host is licensed, Datacenter allows an unlimited number of Windows Server virtual machines. You only license the physical cores once. Each virtual machine still needs its users covered by Windows Server CALs, and any Remote Desktop users inside those VMs need RDS CALs, but no additional operating system licenses are required for the guest servers.
Is this a perpetual license or a subscription?
It is perpetual. You pay once, the key does not expire and there is no renewal. Windows Server 2025 is a Long-Term Servicing Channel release supported into 2034, with five years of mainstream and five years of extended support. Transferability depends on the license type shown in the Product Overview table: retail licenses can move to a new server after removal, OEM licenses stay with the first server.
Can I activate a host that has no internet connection?
Yes. Run slmgr /ipk with your key, then start phone activation from the activation screen or with slui 4. The screen shows an Installation ID. Email it to us and our team returns a Confirmation ID that you type in to complete activation. We handle these requests seven days a week. If activation fails within 30 days and we cannot fix it, you receive a replacement key or a refund.
Should I buy Windows Server 2025 Datacenter or wait, given that Server 2022 is still supported?
For new hosts we recommend 2025. It adds SMB over QUIC in all editions, hotpatching options, GPU partitioning and Active Directory improvements, and it is supported into 2034. Windows Server 2022 leaves mainstream support on October 13, 2026 and extended support on October 14, 2031. The only strong reason to choose 2022 is matching existing cluster nodes, and we sell that edition as well.
