Standard vs Datacenter in Windows Server 2022

The kernel, roles, security features and hardware requirements are identical across the two editions. The difference between Windows Server Standard and Datacenter comes down to virtualization rights and software-defined infrastructure.

With fewer than about five virtual machines on a host, stacking Windows Server 2022 Standard is usually cheaper. Above that, or whenever Storage Spaces Direct, SDN or shielded VMs are on the requirements list, Datacenter is the answer.

Base license vs the 16-Core pack

Microsoft requires every physical core to be licensed, with a floor of 8 core licenses per processor and 16 per server. We therefore sell Windows Server 2022 Datacenter in two forms. The 16-Core pack is the fixed minimum for a host with up to two processors and 16 cores. The base listing on this page covers the smaller core count shown in the Product Overview table and is bought in quantity to reach an exact total. Because Datacenter includes unlimited virtual machines, you license a host's cores exactly once and never stack licenses for additional VMs.

Licensing explained

A Windows Server 2022 Datacenter license is perpetual. Pay once and the right to run the software does not expire. Licensing is per physical core with a 16-core minimum per server. Once all cores are licensed, the host may run the operating system on the physical machine and in unlimited virtual machines, which is why a windows server license for any serious virtualization host almost always means Datacenter. Unlike Standard, the physical host is not restricted to the Hyper-V role.

Client access is licensed separately. Every user or device that authenticates to the host or to any guest needs a Windows Server 2022 CAL, and users who connect to a Remote Desktop Session Host need an RDS CAL too; the Windows Server 2022 RDS 50 User CAL pack covers them. Transfer rights depend on the license type: retail licenses may move to a new server after removal, OEM licenses stay with the original hardware, and volume keys are intended for one organization with limited activations. Worked licensing examples for common hosts

A single-socket host with one 24-core processor requires 24 core licenses: the 16-Core pack plus base licenses covering 8 more cores. A dual-socket host with two 16-core processors requires 32: the 16-Core pack plus 16 more. A dual-socket host with two 32-core processors requires 64, and a three-node cluster of such hosts requires 64 per node, licensed host by host, because Windows Server licenses attach to physical servers and not to the cluster. The number of virtual machines never enters the calculation; once the cores are licensed, Datacenter permits unlimited guests.

If you already own licenses for part of a host, for example a 16-Core pack bought when the server had two 8-core processors, and you have since upgraded to two 12-core processors, you need base licenses for the 8 additional cores. Adding a node to an existing 2022 cluster

Cluster nodes should run the same operating system version and edition. When you add a node to a Windows Server 2022 Hyper-V or Storage Spaces Direct cluster, install the Datacenter edition on it, license all of its physical cores from this page, patch it to the same cumulative update level as the other nodes, and then join it with the Add Node wizard or Add-ClusterNode in PowerShell.
