Visual Studio 2022 Enterprise vs Professional vs Community

The three editions share the same editor, compilers, debugger and workloads. The differences are in the tooling around them and in who is allowed to use each edition. Community is free, but Microsoft limits its use: individuals, open source contributors, classroom learning and academic research may use it freely, and organizations may use it only if they are not an enterprise under Microsoft's definition (more than 250 PCs or more than one million US dollars in annual revenue) and only up to five users. Beyond those limits a paid Professional or Enterprise license is required.

In practice the decision comes down to one question: will your team use the diagnostics and test tools in the bottom half of the table? If yes, Visual Studio 2022 Enterprise pays for itself the first time IntelliTrace pins down a bug that would otherwise have taken a day to reproduce. If no, Professional is the sensible purchase.

System requirements

• Operating system: Windows 11 (any edition, 64-bit) or Windows 10 version 1909 or later (64-bit); Windows Server 2016, 2019 or 2022 for build and server scenarios
• Processor: 1.8 GHz or faster 64-bit processor with at least two cores; four or more cores recommended, ARM64 is supported
• Memory: 4 GB RAM minimum; 16 GB is a realistic minimum for large solutions and for running emulators or containers
• Storage: between roughly 850 MB and 210 GB of free space depending on the workloads you select; an SSD is strongly recommended
• Display: 1366 by 768 minimum, WXGA or better recommended; the IDE scales well on high-DPI monitors
• Administrator rights are needed to run the Visual Studio Installer; .NET Framework 4.7.2 or later is required and is installed automatically

Visual Studio 2022 does not install on Windows 8.1 or Windows 7. If you must support a machine on those systems, our Visual Studio 2019 Professional key covers the last release that did. Licensing explained: per user, perpetual, standalone key

Visual Studio Professional and Enterprise are licensed per user, not per device. The developer named on the license may install the Enterprise IDE on a desktop, a laptop, a home PC and a virtual machine, and use every copy, as long as the same person is the one using them. A second developer needs a second key. This is different from most Windows and Office products in our store, which are licensed per PC.

This is a product key for the IDE. It is not a Visual Studio subscription. That means no monthly Azure credit, no access to the MSDN software download library, no Pluralsight or LinkedIn Learning benefits and no Azure DevOps user license bundled in.
