Licensing explained: one developer, unlimited personal devices

Microsoft licenses Visual Studio Professional per user. The licensed developer can install Professional on their office PC, a laptop, a home machine and several virtual machines, and use all of them. What the license does not permit is sharing: a second developer, even part time, needs their own key. This makes budgeting simple. Count developers, not machines.

How the unlock works

Install Professional from the official Microsoft link in your email, launch it, then go to Help, Register Visual Studio, and choose Unlock with a Product Key. After you enter the 25 characters and click Apply, the trial banner disappears and the license reads as a product key license. Signing in with a Microsoft account is optional; it enables settings roaming but is not required for the key.

Moving from Community or an expired trial

You do not need to uninstall anything. If a machine already runs Visual Studio 2022 Community, run the Visual Studio Installer, add the Professional edition and let it share the existing components; your projects, extensions and settings carry over. If the machine has an expired Professional trial, the IDE opens straight to the licensing dialog and accepts the key there. Either way you are back to work in minutes, and the Community copy can be removed once you are satisfied.
