Windows 10 Pro stops at two processors and 2 TB of memory, cannot create ReFS volumes and has no idea what to do with persistent memory modules. For almost everyone that is irrelevant. The edition arrived in 2017 alongside Windows 10 version 1709, when workstation vendors asked for a consumer-channel Windows that understood server-grade hardware without the licensing of Windows Server. It includes everything in Windows 10 Pro, then adds four things: support for up to four physical CPUs and 6 TB of RAM, the Resilient File System (ReFS) with the ability to format new volumes, native support for NVDIMM-N persistent memory, and SMB Direct for RDMA-capable network adapters. On support: Microsoft ended mainstream Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The four workstation features in detail

ReFS. The Resilient File System uses checksums on metadata, and optionally on file data, to detect and repair corruption, and it supports block cloning and sparse VDL for very fast copies of large files. Since Windows 10 version 1709, only Pro for Workstations and Enterprise can format new ReFS volumes; Pro can read and write existing ones but not create them.

Persistent memory. NVDIMM-N modules sit in DIMM slots and keep data through a power loss. Pro for Workstations recognizes them and exposes them as byte-addressable storage or as very fast block devices, which some databases and rendering caches use directly.

SMB Direct. With RDMA-capable adapters (iWARP, RoCE or InfiniBand), file transfers to a Windows Server or a compatible NAS bypass most of the CPU and run at close to line speed with very low latency. It is the difference between copying a 500 GB project in minutes and in most of an hour.

Expanded hardware limits. Four physical processors, 6 TB of RAM and the Ultimate Performance power plan. The plan is intended for desktops on mains power and is hidden on laptops by default.

A word of caution on ReFS as well: it is a data-volume file system. Windows cannot boot from it, it does not support some NTFS features such as file compression, EFS encryption and disk quotas, and older backup tools may not recognize it. Use it for the scratch array, the media library and the dataset, keep the system drive on NTFS, and you get the integrity and copy-speed benefits without surprises.

Edition comparison

Windows 10 Enterprise matches most of the workstation limits but is sold through organizational channels and lacks the Ultimate Performance plan. For a single professional or a small studio, Pro for Workstations is the simpler license.

System requirements

• 64-bit processor, 1 GHz or faster; one to four physical CPUs (Intel Xeon, AMD EPYC and Threadripper Pro are typical, but any x64 desktop CPU works)
• 2 GB RAM minimum; in practice 32 GB or more, up to 6 TB
• 32 GB or larger system drive; NVMe SSD recommended
• DirectX 9 or later graphics with a WDDM 1.0 driver; professional GPUs are fully supported
• For ReFS: any additional drive or array to format; the system drive itself must remain NTFS
• For SMB Direct: an RDMA-capable network adapter on both ends of the connection
• For persistent memory: NVDIMM-N modules and a motherboard and firmware that support them
• Internet connection for activation and updates; no TPM or Secure Boot requirement on Windows 10

Because there is no 32-bit version, make sure you download the 64-bit media. The Pro for Workstations edition is included in the standard Windows 10 ISO and is selected by the key you enter.
