This page explains how to activate Windows 11 with a product key from Software in Store, and the same for Windows 10, Microsoft Office and Windows Server. Step 1: Choose the right edition
Most activation problems start with the wrong edition, not a bad key. A Home key will not activate a Pro installation, and a Professional Plus key will not activate Home and Business.

Publisher was discontinued in 2024, so if you rely on it, buy Office 2021 Professional Plus, noting that its mainstream support ends on October 13, 2026. Office 2024 is supported until October 9, 2029, which makes Office 2024 Professional Plus the longer-lived choice for Windows and Office 2024 Home and Business the pick for a Mac.
Step 2: Secure checkout

How to activate Windows 11 and Windows 10
- For a new installation, use the link in your email and Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool to make a bootable USB drive. On an existing installation, skip to step 4.
- Boot from the USB drive and follow setup. Enter your key when asked, or select “I don’t have a product key” and enter it afterward.
- Complete setup and connect the PC to the internet.
- On Windows 11, open Settings, System, Activation. On Windows 10, open Settings, Update & Security, Activation.
- Select Change product key, paste your key and select Next.
- Within a minute the screen reads “Windows is activated.” An upgrade key follows the same path on Home; Windows switches to Pro and restarts once.
How to activate Microsoft Office
Office Professional Plus and Office LTSC (2024, 2021, 2019, 2016)
- Download and run the installer from the link in your email. No Microsoft account is needed.
- Open Word. If an activation window appears, choose to enter a product key. Otherwise select File, Account, Change Product Key.
- Enter your 25-character key and follow the prompts.
- Confirm under File, Account: Product Information should read Product Activated.
Office Home and Business and Home and Student (Windows and Mac)
- Go to setup.office.com and sign in with a Microsoft account, or create a free one.
- Enter your key and choose your country and language. The license is now linked to that account.
- Download and install Office from the page that appears, then sign in with the same account. Office activates automatically.
Windows Server activation
Windows Server 2025 and 2022 activate through Settings, System, Activation, Change product key. On Server Core, or from a Command Prompt run as administrator, use:
- slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX to install the key.
- slmgr /ato to activate against Microsoft’s servers.
- slmgr /dlv to confirm the license status.
Standard and Datacenter are licensed per core, 16-core minimum per server. Standard covers the host plus two virtual machines per license; Datacenter allows unlimited virtual machines. Every user or device needs a CAL, and Remote Desktop users also need RDS CALs, installed through Remote Desktop Licensing Manager.
If Microsoft asks for phone activation
Sometimes Windows or Office offers activation by phone instead. This is a normal Microsoft process, not a sign of a bad key.
- On Windows, press the Windows key and R, type slui 4 and press Enter to see the Installation ID. Office’s activation wizard shows the same ID under its telephone option.
- Email the Installation ID to support@softwareinstore.com, naming the product.
- We return a Confirmation ID, seven days a week. Enter it on the same screen and select Activate.
Reinstalling later
A perpetual license does not expire, so you can reinstall as often as you need. What differs is where:
- Retail keys: reinstall on the same PC and the key activates again. To move to a new PC, remove the key from the old one first (slmgr /upk, or uninstall Office), then activate on the new machine.
- OEM keys: tied to the first PC they activate. Reinstalls on that hardware are fine; the key cannot move.
- Volume (MAK) keys: a limited number of activations, and each reinstall may use one.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Microsoft account to activate Windows or Office?
Not for Windows, and not for Office Professional Plus or LTSC, which activate directly against Microsoft’s servers even with a local Windows account. Linking Windows to a Microsoft account is optional but useful, since it stores a digital license for easier reactivation. Office Home and Business and Home and Student are the exception: they are redeemed at setup.office.com with a Microsoft account.
Can I use one key on more than one computer?
One key activates one PC unless the product page says otherwise. Listings such as Windows 11 Pro for 5 PCs and Office 2021 Professional Plus for 5 PCs cover five machines under one key, and this is always stated in the product name. A single-PC key used on a second computer will fail to activate or deactivate the first installation, so buy the multi-PC listing for several machines.
What if my PC does not meet the Windows 11 requirements?
Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0, UEFI Secure Boot, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage and a 1 GHz dual-core 64-bit processor. Many PCs have TPM 2.0 disabled in UEFI settings, so check there before deciding the hardware is too old. If the PC truly cannot run Windows 11, we still sell Windows 10 Pro, with the caveat that Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025.
How long does delivery take, and what if the key does not arrive?
Keys are delivered by email within minutes of payment, seven days a week, and the same key appears under My Account on our site. If nothing has arrived after thirty minutes, check the spam and promotions folders, where automated emails sometimes land, then check My Account.
